Mineral Makeup Is A New Kind Of Natural Product

Filed Under: Face, Make up on January 15, 2010

Mineral makeup was created in the 1970′s but it is only recently that it’s really exploded in the makeup industry. It’s made from all natural minerals from the earth that are finely ground. It doesn’t have the dyes or chemicals that most traditional makeup does and is supposed to be better for your skin. With the hype of organic and green conscious minded products today, mineral is naturally a best seller.

All women’s skin is different. Some have dry skin, some have oily. Some women have very sensitive skin that is easily irritated. Certain brands of makeup can harm the skin or cause it to inflammate, or clog pores up. It’s important to know what you’re using on your skin and to be sure to use a cleanser to wash it off at night.

Mineral based makeup is made from gold, zinc, magnesium, titanium, and other natural sources which are supposed to enlighten the skin. Regular powder can cause worse wrinkles by shadowing the grooves, and clog the pores badly. Minerals supposedly give the skin a youthful glow. Some doctors argue that minerals such as the ones mentioned have been in traditional makeup since the beginning.

That aside, mineral makeups do not contain chemicals that most makeup does and is therefore not harsh on the skin and is pure. If someone’s skin is that sensitive, it doesn’t matter what they use on it as it will cause some type of skin issue. So mineral, being non-comedogenic, is the better choice between the two.

However, mineral is more expensive than regular makeup. It’s supposed to be much better for acne prone skin or those who are sensitive. Users who love it say that it’s gentle and makes the skin glow beautifully, but those who aren’t fans say it’s irritating and causes more wrinkles and dries the skin out.

The zinc in the mineral brands have natural UV shields and helps to protect from sun damage. It’s not a large percentage, but it’s better than having none at all. It’s also supposed to be great for people who suffer from rosacea and skin redness, and it won’t cause inflammation of pre-existing skin problems.

You can also sleep in the makeup, experts say, though dermatologists don’t recommend doing that in any makeup. The skin needs to breathe at night, and traditional makeup is clogging and shouldn’t be left on for too long. If mineral is left on though, it’s not as bad.

Still, not all mineral makeups are the same. According to regulations, any makeup that has mineral as it’s main ingredient can be labeled as mineral makeup, even though it may still contain other chemicals and unnatural ingredients. Most minerals are divided into two kinds – those that call itself mineral yet contain fillers and other harsh chemicals, and those that are truly and completely natural. There’s also something called bismuth oxychloride, which is a mineral but comes from copper and is not of the earth. Be sure to read labels when buying your mineral product.
